The world’s largest sci-fi event, Worldcon, will take place at the Chengdu Science Fiction Museum, designed by Zaha Hadid Architects. Building under construction with an area of 59,000 sq.
The venue for the 81st Annual World Science Fiction Conference and the Hugo Awards will be a vibrant innovation hub and gathering place for “China’s leading science fiction incubator.” In fact, the city of Chengdu, with over 20 million inhabitants, is emerging as an important global center for scientific innovation and research.
Located on Jingrong Lake in the New Science and Innovation City of Chengdu’s Pidu District, the Chengdu Science Fiction Museum has maximum flexibility to host various exhibitions, conferences and events.
Integrated into its natural and unique context, the museum “seems to float above the surface of the lake”. In fact, its fluid design, developed through digital simulation analysis, ensures the efficiency of the composition, site conditions, solar irradiation and structure, which is in line with the 3-star standards of the Chinese green building program. In addition, natural hybrid ventilation, photovoltaic cells built into the dome, and roof design and dimensions contribute to the sustainable and efficient nature of the museum.
Including exhibition galleries, theatres, conference rooms and ancillary support spaces, the museum creates nodes of activity. Connected to the infrastructure of the city, the project creates a path that alternates between indoor and outdoor spaces on several levels, connected to the museum’s exhibition galleries, educational institutions, cafes and other amenities. The surrounding area is planted with native shrubs, and the landscaping allows rainwater to be collected and stored for natural filtration and reuse.
